Avion Market allowed for an opportunity to use environmental strategies to make a space functional while also learning about structural typologies. Given a site located in Chicago, the overall task was keeping a primarily open-air market warm enough for its occupants while also having an appropriate design. I developed a vernacular response to the site condition and the task at hand. To take full advantage of sunlight as an economic resource, the windbreaking roof has a cascading opening strategy on the South side to allow for passive heat gain via sunlight penetrating the space.
Avion Market was derived from extensive research into the big-box structural type. Using a local Walmart for reference, I carefully measured and analyzed the use of steel trusses, dimensions of a single bay size, and roofing material.
